Dear Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Joel Klein:
I’m a parent in the New York City public school system. I am opposed to the new Chancellor Regulation A-812 banning home-baked foods from being sold in schools from the hours of 8am-6pm (with the exception of one PTA sponsored fundraiser a month) while permitting highly processed, packaged food items, like Doritos, Frito Lay Chips and Pop-Tarts, instead. I believe this regulation will do nothing to fight childhood obesity and only succeeds in teaching our children that junk food is healthier for them than foods cooked at home, a policy that will only end up encouraging a lifetime of bad eating habits. Really? Selling junk food to kids?!!!
This regulation is wrong-headed. Please, please repeal it! Foods prepared at home are healthier, less expensive, and promote a better way of life for our children.
As an event planner, one of the tips we offer our clients is make as much homemade items as possible, it save oodles of cash, and in the long run turns out to be a healthier choice.
This is truly an outrage. As a mother who has taken great pains to educate myself on what is and what is not healthy food, the fact that a highly processed bag of Doritos is considered to be “healthier” than a homemade cupcake is not only ridiculous, it is downright ignorant. What you are teaching children is that snacking on processed foods is “okay,” while unhealthy snacking is one of the main contributors to the obesity rates in our country.
Educate yourselves on calories vs. ingredients. Calorie count is one very small part of what makes food healthy or not. I’m incredulous that noone is aware of this. “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” should be read by each and every one of you. Or if that is too difficult, watch Food Inc.
Continue the good fight. Money must be taken out of the equation. Until we recognize that the corporations are our enemies, we will fail. Remember it was and is ‘by the people ….. for the people’ first.
